As the crowds start to disappear, we start to head into some of the finest days of the year on Nantucket. Take this time to relax, enjoy, and maybe even learn a little more about Nantucket history. A great place to start with children is at the Maria Mitchell Association, 2 Vestal St. At this location, there is a natural history museum and you can find out more about opportunities to take part in several programs for adult and children.

Maria Mitchell grew up on Nantucket and was one of the first women astronomers. It was on her parent’s roof on 1847 that she discover a comet, making her famous over night. She was the first women to become a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. It’s no wonder that her love of the stars started here, where you can see the night sky light up every night! You and your family can learn more about the work that Maria Mitchell did throughout her life and take part in the wonderful natural science programs that have been started in her name. In articular, see through a telescope at the observatory. For more information go to the Maria Mitchell Association website at www.mmo.org/. They offer daily programs to the public which can be found on the “children’s events” calendar.

Make sure to enjoy………..

Written by Melanie on August 28th, 2010

As we finish out the last of August, you need to remind yourself to take advantage of summer! I see it like the end of a fireworks show, you need to fit everything fun in while it’s still here. Before you leave Nantucket you should consider:

1. Take your family on a bike ride. Taking a ride together if fun, good exercise, and is a great way to see Nantucket.

2. Swim every day! If it’s cool and windy, find a beach that is protected from the wind. See which way a flag is blowing and head to a beach in that direction for a calmer and warmer weather or check a website such as, www.weaterunderground.com for the exact wind direction. Always head the opposite direction than the wind.

3. Visit the Farmers Market on Saturday morning. Head into town to North Union St. (between the Starlight and the post office) for some local handmade gifts to take home.

4. Get out on a boat! The most family friendly boat operations are, The Endeavor sailboat, and the Ice Cream Cruise. The Endeavor also offers a “pirate adventure” at different times in the morning. Check out the kid’s events list for more information. Both boats are found in on the docks by the Hyline office.

5. Take a nature walk this Tuesday at the UMass field station, at 180 Polpis Road. You and your family will learn lots about the natural history of Nantucket and you will experience some of the most beautiful landscape on the island. For more information, check the kid’s activities guide.

6. Eat ice cream at the Juice Bar, it’s worth the wait! Splurge on the homemade waffle cones, they are as good as they smell! Try my flavor, chocolate peanut butter cookie dough!

7. Spend quality time with family and friends. As you spend your last few days on the island, remember how special it is to be here, away from the “real world”. This is the best place for quality time that will build bonds and memories that last a lifetime.

I hope everyone enjoyed his or her summer out here! I know that I did! It has been the hottest and sunniest weather in the history of Nantucket, and I loved every minute of the sunshine and heat! Close your eyes and remember it in the middle of a cold winter. When you have such a short summer season as we do here, you need to savor every moment and live life to the fullest; for a vacationer, that may be slowing down and enjoying the quiet, or getting out there and experiencing all that Nantucket has to offer. Either way, enjoy these last few days and plan to come back soon. If you like the quiet, you may even want to try coming back in the “off season”.

Rainy Day Activities

Written by Melanie on August 23rd, 2010

We have had a sunny summer this year, but indoor activities are easily found on the island too. So…what is there to do with children on a rainy day in Nantucket?

For a little island, there are a surprising number of indoor activities and places to visit with children.

In town, you can visit the Whaling Museum, located at 11 Broad Street, downtown Nantucket. The museum is a beautiful and newly renovated building where you can see artifacts from the whaling days. Your children will be amazed with a a giant whale skeleton and a fascinating children’s discovery room which is filled with hands-on activities, and many things for children to explore. The museum website is www.nha.org.

Also in town is the Atheneum, our historic public library. They have a beautiful children’s room with kid’s size tables and chairs, cozy places to read books and a really fun pop-up book section. The pop-up books can only be viewed at the library, so pull up a chair and enjoy! The Atheneum also offers free programming for children. Go to their website for a schedule of events.

For a bit of an adventure and for some excellent island views, climb the church tower at the First Congregational Church, 62 Center Street. Children climb free while adults pay $5.00 for the best view in Nantucket.

Visit the Maria Mitchell Museums. The Maria Mitchell foundation has a couple of very exciting museums.

The Hinchman House is a natural history museum located at 7 Milk Street. The museum is filled with live and preserved flora and fauna. There are fun and educational interactive games, and cool facts about the natural history of Nantucket.

The Maria Mitchell Association Aquarium located at 28 Washington Street and has a touch tank where you can pick up a variety of sea creatures such as, starfish and hermit crabs. There are two small rooms filled with interesting local fish and a large tank for bigger fish. Their friendly staff is happy to share fun facts and information with you.

Maria Mitchell also offers summer day camps for children ages 4 and older. For more information, check out their website at www.mmo.org.

The Starlight Movie Theater, at 1 North Union St. often has a PG movie in the afternoon.

The Nantucket Ice Rink, 1 Backus Lane, has public skate times once a day. For a current schedule and prices, go to, www.nantucketice.org.

A Clean Nantucket

Written by Melanie on August 17th, 2010

Are you ever amazed at how well Nantucket is kept in general? The beaches, roads, and downtown are all kept beautifully clean. There is a group here that can be thanked for their hard work and dedication in keeping the island clean and green. They are called “Nantucket Clean Team”. A businessman named, Bill Connell, who spends time between NYC and Nantucket started  the group after realizing the amazing natural beauty of the island, and how special the island is to him.  Bill decided to give back by organizing and donating his time into a cleaning effort. It’s hard to believe that people still through trash out of car windows, but it happens. It’s also hard to believe that some people leave their trash behind at the beach, but still some do! Other times, it’s a case of trash flying out of a trash truck or off the back of a work vehicle.

Thanks to Nantucket Clean Team, some of this trash and more gets picked up, thrown out, and even recycled. You may have seen some of the team on Saturday mornings wearing their bright green shirts. The reason that I am blogging about this topic is to show my appreciation and also to let you know that you and your family could be a part of this great effort. Check out their website to find out which part of the island that they will be cleaning this week, http://ackcleanteam.wordpress.com/. Children are welcome!!! Even if you decide not to help, don’t be shy to say “Thanks!” when you see one of the members out helping to keep Nantucket clean. Please do your best to put trash in a receptacle and always recycle glass, metal, and plastic.

Ten Things that you don’t want to miss while on Nantucket

Written by Melanie on August 11th, 2010

1. Spend time as a family building a sandcastle. It doesn’t matter which beach you go to. Digging in the sand is relaxing and even therapeutic for any busy adult. Get out your shovels, pails, and build with your kids in the sand while making memories that will last forever!

2. Climb the First Congregational church tower at 62 Center St for the best view of the island. Adults are $5.00 and children are free. The 360 degree view from the top is well worth the climb.

3. Enjoy the Atheneum, our public library. Our library has some of the best FREE programs for children. They offer story time, craft classes, creative movement, and even concerts. Check out their website to see a calendar of events, www.nantucketatheneum.org.

4. Play in the sandbar at Jetties beach during low tide. Find out when low tide occurs, and head to Jetties for one of the most magical places to swim and play. The sandbar is huge and expands to both sides of the Jetty. There are many different types of sea life that can be explored including seashells, seaweed, and crabs.

5. Visit the historical lighthouses of Nantucket. There are three lighthouses spread out on the island. Try to visit them all with your children. Brant Point, as you enter the harbor, is the second oldest lighthouse in the United Stated (the oldest is the Boston light). Sankaty Head Lighthouse is located in Sconset and can be seen by driving on Polpis road. The third lighthouse is a little harder to get to, because you need either a boat or a 4 wheel drive vehicle with a permit to drive on Great Point. The best way if you are visiting is to rent a Jeep that already has a pass. The adventurous drive out to Great Point is well worth the money. The natural world that you pass along the way is breathtaking.

6. Go to the Juice Bar for ice cream! One of our summer traditions is to get ice cream and eat it while looking at the boats in the harbor. Splurge for the homemade cones or cups; they taste as good as they smell.

7. Go to the turtle pond on Madaket road, just past the dump on the left. The turtles are huge and prehistoric looking. People often bring chicken tied to a string to feed to the turtles. The turtles will take bites, and you can see them up close. If you do this, use natural twine that will breakdown, and please make sure not to leave any trash.

8. Visit Children’s Beach. There are several concerts, puppet shows, yoga classes, and even a tie dye clinic on Fridays for children. It’s also the best field to run in and chase a ball. Check out our events calendar for what is happening this week.

9. Go to a south shore beach. The big waves are on the south shore. There is nothing like playing in the waves! Bring your boogie boards and a shade umbrella for an afternoon of fun in the sun!

10. After a great day, head to the Cisco brewery. It’s a little strange to suggest a brewery for a kid’s activity, but this is a place where you can take your kids to get them a soft drink while you relax with a local brew. After all of the day’s activities, it might be just the thing you need as an adult. Kids and dogs are welcome here and they even have fun games to play.

Ten things you don’t want to miss while on vacation in Nantucket

Written by Melanie on August 8th, 2010
