A FEW WORDS ON 74 MAIN STREET
Back Deck

Unlike many of Nantucket's formal Greek and Federalist houses, 74 Main is distinguished by its unique style. Built at the turn of the century, it is one of the very few Victorian homes remaining on the island. This charming Queen Anne-style house was built at a time when the whaling economy that made Nantucket famous was bowing to the island's emerging reputation as a vacationer's paradise. Some of the more whimsical touches of Victorian architecture, such as sculpted shingles and dramatic eaves and roof lines, reflect the trend away

from the more rigid styles found in many of the island's buildings. The current owner is an architect and artist who divides her time between Nantucket and New York City; she has done much to combine the house's historic charm with modern amenities to create an atmosphere of relaxed stateliness that draws from the past while offering the comforts of the present. Come and visit 74 Main St., experience the wonder of Nantucket, and enjoy an unforgettable time on our island. |
